Where the Pros Party – Favorite Closing Day Resorts

closing day

Amie Engerbretson – My favorite place for closing day is hands down Squaw Valley USA! Spring time in Squaw is nothing but fun and sun. The corn snow is awesome and they keep a lot of killer terrain open late. Their pond skim party is second to none, with one of the few pond skim competitions that uses an actual natural pond! The closing party at Le Chamois can’t be beat either. Live bands on the deck with sunshine and dancing is the best! This year–with a huge snowfall in the Sierras–I plan to be skiing the Palisades on the 4th of July!

Joona Kangas – My favorite springtime/closing day resort is Rikgränsen, Sweden. I like it the most because it’s such a good place to build stuff after they close the resorts in Finland. It’s a legendary place with great vibes.

Lexi DuPontSun Valley is the absolutely best place to be on closing day! Hundreds of people gather on the top of the resort dressed in wild outfits drinking adult beverages and dancing. Fireworks, music, booze and everyone’s strongest Idaho personalities come out. Everyone waits until the ski patrol forces us down the hill and we all party ski to the base where we dance in our ski boots until the sun goes down!

Sean Jordan – I would have to say my favorite closing day resort would be Keystone. Everyone flocks to A-51 and they have a pretty laid back atmosphere. Their park is always super fun and there is always a big group of people you know. Looking forward to it again this year!

Clayton Vila – Mammoth Mountain. When they have a good snow year, the spring is what I live for. It’s the best of both worlds: warm weather, soft snow, and a park just as good as mid-winter.

Beyond the Resort – Our Top 5 Backcountry Tips

Touring safely in the backcountry requires extensive knowledge of terrain and an understanding of a myriad of variables. These include but are not limited to the sun, wind and temperatures present and how they will affect the snowpack. While some of these tips can help minimize risk, the first step towards safely entering the backcountry is to take an AIARE Level 1 course.

Brush up on your skills with our Elevated Education Series. Here is our top 5 from the series, but check out other episodes for more knowledge on backcountry safety and awareness.

Skin Application. The first step to getting out and enjoying new zones is applying and removing your climbing skins properly.

The basics. Ski Touring is all about conserving energy and being efficient so you’re in top shape for the ride down.

Kick turns. Ah, the dreaded kick turn. Like most things, these just take practice. Take a look at Martin Volken making it look easy, then give it your best shot on your next tour.

Digging a snow pit. This video is the first of 5 concerning snow pits, and as the introduction, it would be worth watching them all. These are essential to understanding the snow pack, what to watch for and whether it’s safe to ski on an aspect.

Building an emergency shelter. This is an essential skill that could come in very handy someday. As Martin shows in the video, it can also be done as a minimalist shelter for mild-weather overnight tours.

We’re giving away Pinnacle 130s AND Minaret 100s. Enter now!

Enter below to win a pair of touring boots! Either a pair of men’s Pinnacle 130 or women’s Minaret 100 boots. In addition to that, we are giving away 5 SIGNED copies of Martin Volken’s book Backcountry Ski & Snowboard Routes: Washington to residents of Washington, British Columbia, Oregon & Montana! Official Rules and Regulations.

Powder Dreams — K2 Alliance

This past winter, Amie Engerbretson and McKenna Peterson went on a lot of wild ski trips. Lucky for them (and us) Mother Nature smiled upon us during our K2 Alliance Team Shoot in Utah. As soon as we arrived, big, lofty flakes started falling from the sky and didn’t let up until the last day of our trip. Taking full advantage, we went straight to Snowbird and enjoyed a few days of deep snow, high vertical and tight trees. Looking back the conditions were all time—a Powder Dream, if you will. | Filmed/Edited by Nick Meilleur | Music – “Let Go” by CMRN | #seriousfun | Take a look at the all-new women’s freeride line right here and enter below to win an ALL-NEW pair of K2 Fulluvit 95 skis! Just be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook to be eligible. Full contest rules here.

K2 B.F.C. Boots—Built For Comfort *ENTER TO WIN!*

k2 bfc
The most comfortable boots…ever.

We’ve been going over the primary issues many of us have with ski boots—hard to get into, painful to stand in, and hard to walk around comfortably! The key was to eliminate these issues while still maintaining top-level performance. We’ve unlocked this with the all new K2 B.F.C. ski boot—#BuiltForComfort. Watch the video below!👇

The key elements are a Hands-Free Entry system which allows your foot to slide naturally into the boot; a Natural Stance/Natural Stride profile which promotes natural standing and walking; and an Après Mode which unlocks the upper cuff from the lower shell with the flip of a switch, giving you walkable comfort and convenience once you’re off your skis.

By Nick Meilleur, Seattle, WA: What a day for Kyler Tritter and his brother Brayden in sunny Utah. After winning the K2 x Powderbird Spring Break Heli Giveaway last week with his badass POV video, we flew the boys out and treated them to a day in the heli with none other than Pep Fujas.

Pep, Kyler and Brayden are stoked in the heli!

Upon arrival at the Powderbird Heli Port, we were welcomed with smiles, hot coffee and a smorgasbord of delicious breakfast dishes. After eating and drinking our fill we met with Mike Morris, our guide for the day. Besides being a badass skier and knowing the Wasatch range like the back of his hand, Mike is a hell of a nice guy and we were beyond stoked to have him show us around.

Kyler and Mike.

Conditions were all time—bluebird sky, fresh pow and the mountains to ourselves. What resulted was lots of adrenaline, high fives, pow slashes and good times! Check out the video below.
